Aquamarine cools anger and helps create a calm, centered, relaxed but alert state with balanced energy. It is a stone of the Divine Feminine–teaching a form of power that is yielding and yet resilient, and letting you speak your truth clearly from a place of inner knowing rather than reactivity.
Aquamarine is a brilliant, clear gemstone that is sometimes mistaken or the less expensive blue topaz. Its color ranges from light to dark blue, and sometimes a bluish green. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March. Aquamarine is commonly found alongside other beryls in countries such as Russia and Brazil; it is also found in other parts of the world including Colorado, which has named it their official state gem. Aquamarine is often heated to enhance the color, so be sure to ask when purchasing one of these stones if it is natural or treated.
Aquamarine sits at a 7.5 – 8 on the Mohs scale (somewhere between quartz andtopaz). It is a member of the beryl family, along with emerald, morganite, and bixbite (red emerald). Aquamarine’s name comes from Latin, meaning water and sea.
The best quality aquamarine seems to come from Brazil, but it is also found in Russia, Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and parts of the United States. Aquamarine is the official state gem of Colorado.
Aquamarine is the current birthstone for March, but before the fifteenth century is was considered the birthstone for October. Aquamarine is also thegemstone for the 19th year of marriage and for the astrological sign Pisces.
Long associated with water, aquamarine was often worn by sailors to ward off seasickness and encourage safe travel. It was also seen as a stone of eternal youth.
Because aquamarine is a relatively hard stone, it is safe for all forms of jewelry, such as rings, pendants, and earrings. Many people recommend it for earrings, as the gemstone is often faceted and becomes exceptionally appealing when worn close to the face.
Aquamarines needs to be cleaned often to keep them stunning. The color pales when dirt collects around the stone; so keep this in mind when buying lighter or pale colored stones. Be careful not to mistake blue topaz gemstones for aquamarine. Topaz is beautiful in it’s own right, but is less expensive than aquamarine and can sometimes be improperly represented. Another imitation of aquamarine is a form of spinel called aquamarine spinel.v
